How ProtonMail is changing the way we email by protecting privacy
The Internet has changed the way we communicate but, at same time, it has made us venerable to surveillance and spying on a large scale. Today, every email we send can be monitored and saved against our will. There aren't many email security tools out there which are free, secure and effective. Fortunately, we have ProtonMail. This is an email server that is free; it's end-to-end encrypted and is available on the web and has mobile interface. ProtonMail, unlike other data security tools is easy to use and is highly encrypted. It's free and offers additional features like email expiry, mobile apps for iOS and Android to its users. ProtonMail has 500 MB of online storage for each user and the users have an option to upgrade their account up to 20GB. Â Unlike other email security tools, ProtonMail is automatically and transparently encrypted right at the time of the delivery. It only gets decrypted at the recipient's machine when opened. Moreover, no deciphered or readable copy is left at any server, even the unencrypted emails we receive at ProtonMail are stored in encrypted form. ProtonMail is Switzerland based and their servers located in Switzerland. The email system is protected by the mountainous and neutral European country's information privacy laws. Also with the end-to-end encryption, the email content is encrypted as soon as a user clicks the send button and only gets decrypted when the recipient opens it. Since the email can only be unlocked with the recipient's very own and personal key, nobody in between can decrypt it. This makes the ProtonMail encryption very hard to crack. Unlike other boring email security tools, ProtonMail offers its users many additional features including handy keyword shortcuts. Â ProtonMail can also make use of the browser to send new mail notifications to the desktop. ProtonMail lets its users send plain or richly formatted text, attachments and inline images, all safely encrypted, ProtonMail users can use their search feature for searching through senders, recipients, subjects, dates and other header fields for search but since the actual message texts and attachments are encrypted, ProtonMail does not search through the text. In addition to that, ProtonMail lets its users set up filters that mark and move or label mail and maintain black as well as white list of senders. ProtonMail has inbuilt Spam email control using the venerable SpamAssassin for spam filtering. ProtonMail can keep its users inbox clear of junk and spam mails. The best thing about ProtonMail is that it does not collect personal information of its users when an account is created, the IP addresses from where users create the account are not saved. So users can set up accounts for all purposes while remain completely anonymous. ProtonMail employs time-tested PGP for high-grade encryption and maintains the open source OpenPGP.js library for use of OpenPGP in browsers too.
