What is ActOnPrivacy ?

Though Ukraine promised to be a place of true Western-style democracy, it disappointed me, with the way it turned out– government took liberties with the citizen’s privacy.  That got me thinking about data privacy, and I, Marina Acton, realized that privacy is a much needed topic to talk about. I always wanted to contribute my bit to the user’s privacy riddle, protecting private data and that’s how I thought of ActOn privacy.

ActOn privacy basically relates to acting on privacy—making people aware about rapidly increasing concerns for data protection. It is a definition of privacy, tailored to awareness about various data breaches. What ActOn privacy says is that, essentially, the things are learnt about secured data. So it actually means your privacy wouldn’t be harmed by learning the things about it. Data Privacy is a paramount concern, and thanks to our initiative ActOn Privacy for starting a movement for it.  For instance, you need to "trust an external client" before sharing your personal data, or plugging into the organization. One of the best approach that has always worked is an assurance that your personal data won’t be attacked.

How can I not mention about the real warriors of data privacy movement as I confess to feeling my admiration towards Edward Snowden! Like him, revealing the biggest intelligence leak about surveillance by US dictates in the National Security Agency — drawing the world’s attention to an unnoticed issue of citizen’s privacy. His revelations of mass surveillance by the US officials is undoubtedly the biggest whistleblowing move towards a clean, data privacy reform.  Another true star in the data security history would be Julian Assange, who promoted data transparency as a tool of governmental oversight. Though his website, Wikileaks has always been a controversial debate, he has successfully managed to notify US citizens about illicit deeds led by government officials. The global storm of allegations towards Facebook, with The Cambridge Analytica case was another big shocker, revealing the private data of 50 million users, being collected without their knowledge. This incident was an eye opener for various U.S. and British citizens, to dig more about data privacy, and how it is getting invaded. This also means that we have accepted the fact that data attack is pertinent, while dealing with user’s information. Someone is always observing to make an attempt, attacking at the right time while invading your privacy.

We’ve entered a time where data privacy is soon to be a very, very large topic, and lots of people are to be made aware of it. I think this is going to be next big debate to talk on. I don’t think it is feasible anymore to overlook the small data breaches and provide our personal details just like that, so I think this question of data privacy in this technological scenario where new innovations are being witnessed is becoming a more and more important thing to talk about. With ActOn privacy we are trying to capture the fact that technology is an innovating process, and we better make a move towards securing our privacy, before it becomes a severe concern for all. So let’s say that there was a need of a platform, alerting people about the consequences of data invasion. You share your personal information, and now somebody else comes along and invades your data. They can’t do that, even if it is the government, practicing mass surveillance.

For a perfect, secured data environment, regular awareness checks are to be performed without accumulating much stress to the user. More the effort towards securing our personal data, more will be the possibilities of having a stress-free data protected ecosystem. We need to work together and support the understanding of data privacy, while eliminating the root cause of data breaches. Now is the time to function together as the commencement of understanding privacy, and not only as an enforced argument. Data protection is a critical issue which can be dealt with a collective effort, and though every single one of us cares about data privacy, only few come forward and take a collective step within a community. It is important to understand that security of our personal data is a culture, and not a product. All it needs is a constant pledge towards a resilient environment for the protection of personal information. Social communication is on an unbiased rise with various attacks, email hacks, fraudulent calls and messages. We must understand that having a casual approach towards data security, can bring the user’s privacy to ground zero. Also, businesses need to be cautious about data classification and identification. There is a need to discern the scope of user’s data, specifying the risk in case the data gets ruptured.

To prepare well for data security, we better Act on Privacy— just like we Act On health, Act against corruption, and more— to cover the unexpected rise in data breaches, or an unauthorized access to people’s private data. It may be an uphill challenge to regulate a data secured environment,  ActOn privacy is all geared up to revolutionize the upcoming privacy changes, making it easy for the general public. “We need to make sure that we use secured data products/services, protecting our private data from getting breached”- supporting Criptext is the biggest reason. Criptext provides an opportunity to encrypt your email, making it secure, accessible only to the proposed user.
